About the President Elder Vanard J. Mendinghall is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, where he received his early childhood education, and joined the Seventh-day Adventist church as a teenager.
He is a graduate of Central Piedmont Community College with an Associate Science Degree in Commercial Art Advertising and Design.
In 1965, he was drafted and trained as a US Army Medic. He volunteered for Operation White Coat, and ended his career as a US Army Personnel Specialist at Walter Reid Army Hospital.
He attended Oakwood College for one year then transferred to A & T State University, where he graduated with a B.S. Degree in Secondary Education.
Later he was inspired to return to Andrews University, where he earned his M.A. in religion.
He has served the South Atlantic Conference as Youth Federation President, Teacher/Principal, Pastor, Youth & Pathfinder Director, Director of Education, Health Ministries Leader, Communication Director, Executive Secretary & Stewardship Director, where literally hundreds of families are debt free as a result of his seminars.
Elder Mendinghall is a compassionate, spirit-filled, visionary leader, who trusts in God explicitly for daily direction. He genuinely loves people and practices a participatory style of leadership. God has used him not only as a builder of temples, but a builder and affirmer of people. He is a man driven by principle and courage.
Under his leadership, the conference membership has increased by over 13,000 precious souls. He was instrumental in the construction of a beautiful 4,500 seat campground worship center. A long term vision has come into fruition in the form of a Youth Worship Center with gymnasium. In addition, God has blessed this conference with a brand new seven-million-dollar school in Atlanta. This was accomplished while remaining financially solvent.

He is married to the former Ruth Howard of Trenton, New Jersey, an experienced church-school teacher of 40 years. They have two daughters: Kimberly Cail, a church school teacher in Boston, Massachusetts, and mother of two of his grandchildren, Nina and April, (Kimberly is married to Hodari Cail, a counselor at the Wayside Youth Center in Boston); and April Nixon, a fourth grade school teacher in Durham, and mother of his other two grandchildren, 3rd John and Julia. (April is married to Pastor John Nixon, II of Durham, North Carolina.)
In the spring of May of 1997, Elder Mendinghall was asked to serve as the seventh President of the great South Atlantic Conference.
He is an inspiring prolific preacher, whose goal is to lift up Jesus in both word and deed.
